Hi my name is Trish.
My husband Ernest is a craftsman who has spent his working life creating bespoke items made of wood for discerning clients and to their specifications.
Ernest is truly passionate about wood. Maybe because he is a fire sign and wood fuels fire! For the first time he has put together an exclusive collection that he has designed.
We were visiting family in Italy (how lucky are we?) when Ernest started drawing on a menu (I am used to this). He was inspired by the 3D effect painting techniques on the wall of the restaurant in Modena.
He persuaded Alex (son) to return there to take photographs which kept him inspired. Ernest then spent months sourcing veneers and teaching himself techniques to use the veneers in a way that he could incorporate into clocks. Why clocks? I have no idea.
Ernest then found a supplier of stunning coloured veneers dyed in Italy. I had such a good time putting together a series each with 3 colours for each clock. Ernest is allergic to colour so this was not always easy..... He prefers the black/grey or natural wood combos. However, to his credit he did spend hours sanding and working on the coloured veneers.
Friends and family who saw what we were doing (stylish home is now a workshop where boxes of different coloured veneers abound on every surface) suggested that the geometric design would look good on place mats and coasters.
I got busy with the colour combinations and put together purples with grey; terracottas with cream; lime green with greys and black and greys. Ernest then spent hours laying the small mosaic tiles of veneer which had been laser cut. Once this had been done we took the originals to a printer where the originals were carefully scanned to ensure that the idiosyncrasies in the veneers were retained.
Ernest then spent weeks trying to find a UK based company to put a high quality coating of melamine onto the original imaging in order to make place mats at an affordable price. I showed the samples to my great chum Nicki who instantly ordered a dozen of them. We now have a range of 8 colours available and we are also able to offer a bespoke colour service on request.
With some trepidation at the end of March 2015 I booked a stand at the Cotswold Craft Market in the Corn Hall in Cirencester, Gloucestershire. This was a first for me and yes very scary. Fortunately the other stall holders were amazingly kind and supportive. Shortly before 12 noon I sold a clock to a lovely couple who came to the stand. Naturally I called Ernest straight away and we were both thrilled that other people liked our work.
We now have a regular stand at the Corn Hall off the Market Square in Cirencester, Gloucestershire every Saturday from 9 to 4.30pm.
We have now put together a small range of clocks; wall art (due to another friend Gloria who suggested it would look great in a "minimalist" room so this is now our "Gloriana" range) and because we love boxes a range of modestly priced boxes with veneers applied to the lid. Each item truly is a "one off". We are proud to say that our first international order was received 2 weeks ago and one of our boxes now resides in an elegant New York apartment.
